Rounded bedroom furniture: headboard, bedside tables, wardrobe

Last updated: October 20, 2026
In short

Rounded bedroom furniture – a curved headboard, round bedside tables, a chest, dressing table and wardrobe with a curve – calms the room and is safer at night, with no corners at knee height. The design starts with the bed and the walkways around it, with curves where you walk in the dark.

Rounded bedroom furniture means a curved headboard, round bedside tables, a dressing table and chest of drawers with arches, and a wardrobe with a rounded side. In a bedroom it has two advantages: it calms the room, and it is safer, because at night, in the dark, there is nothing to bump into.

Why rounded forms work so well in a bedroom

The bedroom is a room for rest, and a soft, rounded form feels calmer than sharp edges. Rounded furniture softens the interior in the same way as fabrics, curtains or gentle lighting – it works in the same direction.

There is also a very practical reason. We walk into the bedroom in the dark, get up at night and feel our way between the bed and the wardrobe. The corner of a bedside table or chest of drawers at knee height is the classic source of bruises. A rounded edge doesn't remove that risk completely, but it clearly reduces it.

Finally, bedrooms are often small. In a tight room, furniture without corners makes it easier to get around the bed and makes the space feel less cluttered.

Which rounded pieces work in a bedroom

Curved headboard and the wall behind the bed

An arched headboard – upholstered, lacquered or slatted – is the strongest rounded accent in a bedroom. It can be combined with a unit covering the whole wall behind the bed: shelves, niches for lamps and bedside tables in one coherent form.

Visualisation – headboard and bedside tables in one unit: an arch above the bed and, on each side, a niche with rounded corners and a reading light.

Round bedside tables

A bedside table stands exactly where you get up at night, so this is the piece that benefits most from a rounded shape. A round table with a fluted front and drawers holds what you need by the bed and looks light at the same time.

Chest of drawers and dressing table with arches

A chest of drawers with rounded sides or a dressing table with an arched mirror gives character to the whole bedroom. The dressing table can be built into a niche or combined with the wardrobe – with a top that has a rounded corner on the walkway side.

Wardrobe with a rounded side

A tall built-in wardrobe is usually the largest piece in a bedroom. A rounded side with curved open shelves softens its mass, especially where the wardrobe ends by the door or by the way to the bed. The interior is designed as usual – details in our articles on the sliding wardrobe for a niche and the custom walk-in wardrobe.

Visualisation – by the door the wardrobe ends in curved shelves instead of a sharp corner: the walkway is safer and the unit looks lighter.

Wall-hung cabinet or shelf with a wavy shape

In a bedroom with an en-suite or a dressing area, wall-hung cabinets with a wavy front look good. Such a piece lifts off the floor, so a small room feels bigger.

Dimensions and ergonomics: what to keep in mind

Rounded furniture doesn't replace planning the walkways. A few guideline values every bedroom design starts with:

ElementGuidelineNotes
Walkway around the bedapprox. 60–70 cmA rounded bedside table makes a narrower walkway easier to use
Bedside table heightclose to mattress heightA top level with the mattress or slightly higher is most comfortable
Space in front of the wardrobeapprox. 70–90 cmWith hinged doors, measure from the open door
Dressing table heightapprox. 72–76 cmAs for a desk, for a chair or pouffe

These are reference points, not standards. Final dimensions depend on the bed, mattress, doors and windows – which is why they come only after measurement.

Materials and colours for rounded bedroom furniture

In a bedroom, the finish of furniture is seen up close – by the bed, at the dressing table. So it is worth choosing materials that are pleasant to the touch.

  • Matt lacquer – smooth, warm to the touch, no joins on the curve. Powder pinks, beiges, greige and muted greens work well in a bedroom.
  • Veneer – wood that wraps the curve; light oak for calm interiors, walnut for darker, cosier ones.
  • Fluting – vertical slats on the fronts of bedside tables and chests add texture and emphasise the curve.
  • Upholstery – headboard, wall panels and the dressing-table seat; pleasant, easy-to-clean fabrics.

A calm bedroom palette goes well with styles in which the curve is natural: japandi, soft minimalism and organic modern. If you prefer a bolder character with horizontal lines and metal details, see our guide to the streamline style.

How to plan custom rounded bedroom furniture

  1. Start with the bed. Its size and position define the bedside tables, the headboard and the walkways. Rounded furniture is designed around it.
  2. Round off where you walk in the dark. Bedside tables, the corner of the chest of drawers by the door, the side of the wardrobe by the way to the bathroom.
  3. Plan the lighting. Reading lights by the headboard, lighting under the bedside tables, soft light in the wardrobe – cabling is planned before renovation.
  4. Join pieces into one line. The headboard, bedside tables and the shelf above them can form one unit with the same radius.
  5. Don't forget storage. A rounded form holds a little less than a straight one, so drawers under the bed or a well-planned wardrobe make up the difference.
Cabinetmaker's tip: design a bedside table with a rounded front with full-extension, soft-close drawers. At night what matters is opening it with one hand and without noise – the shape comes second.

Common mistakes

  • A headboard too big for a small room. A tall, wide arch can dominate the bedroom – its size is matched to the wall and ceiling.
  • A round bedside table with no room for things. A nice shape, but the phone, book and glasses have nowhere to go. The top must be usable.
  • Only one piece in a set is rounded. A rounded bedside table next to a sharp-cornered chest in the same colour looks like a mistake. Better to plan the whole set.
  • No plan for cables. Chargers, lamps and sockets by the bed must be included in the design, especially in a unit behind the headboard.

How we work on rounded bedroom furniture at Grandis

We make bedside tables, headboards, chests of drawers and wardrobes with curves to order and deliver them across Europe. First a free laser measurement, then a 3D visualisation showing the radii, the front layout and the lighting. The price in the contract is fixed, and the schedule is agreed in the same contract. Installation is done by our own in-house team. More examples in our bedroom projects and on the custom furniture for home page. Rounded furniture for the day zone is covered in our article on rounded living room furniture.

Frequently asked questions

Which rounded pieces are worth having in a bedroom?

A curved headboard and round bedside tables give the most – these are the pieces you spend the most time next to and the easiest to bump into at night. Next come a chest of drawers or dressing table with arches and a rounded wardrobe side.

Does rounded furniture suit a small bedroom?

Yes. Without corners it is easier to move around the bed, and wall-hung rounded cabinets reveal the floor and make the room look bigger. Just match the size of the headboard to the wall.

Is a rounded bedside table less spacious?

Slightly, because a rounded body has less room in the corners. Well-designed full-extension drawers and a top of the right size make the difference small in everyday use.

Which colours suit rounded bedroom furniture?

Usually calm, warm tones: beiges, greige, powder pink, muted green or natural wood. The rounded form is an accent in itself, so it doesn't need strong contrasts.

Can bedside tables and the headboard be combined into one unit?

Yes, this is a common custom solution. The headboard, bedside tables and the shelf above them form one wall with the same radius, with lighting and sockets built in.
